Don Roberto: A Talk by Jamie Jauncey
Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore (1852-1936) is best known as the co-founder with Keir Hardie of the Scottish Labour Party, forerunner of the modern Labour Party, and later as founding president of the Scottish National Party. But in a long and extraordinary life he was many other things besides: politician, writer, horseman, traveller, adventurer, socialist, fighter for social justice, visionary, humanitarian. As his friend Joseph Conrad said: ‘when I think of you I feel as if I have lived all my life in a dark hole without seeing or knowing anything.’
In this illustrated talk, Jamie Jauncey, Don Roberto’s great-great-nephew and author of a major new biography, asks why this iconic figure is not better remembered today and reflects on what it was like to grow up with a near-mythical figure in recent family history.
