The Glasgow Society of Women Artists have been honoured once again to have their bi-annual Summer Exhibition at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum. Established in 1882 as the Glasgow Ladies, the society has boasted Jessie M. King, Mary Armour and Joan Eardley as members, their goal was to redress the lack of exhibiting opportunities and recognition for women Artists. Now many exceptionally talented women are continuing the tradition. This exhibition will showcase small works by Artist Members including Jeweller Sheena Stevens, Glass Artist Andrea O’Neill, Painters: Lynn Howarth, Lesley Anne Derks, Catherine King, Lyssie Stevens, Sheila Tandy, Yvonne Taylor, Karen Strang and textile artist Margaret Murray to name just a few.
A thriving society of over 250 members, there are both Artist and lay (non-Exhibiting) members and our aim today is to support and showcase women in Art. Our Lay and Artist members enjoy monthly talks and demonstrations by leading Scottish Artists and makers, for example Elspeth Lamb, Robert Kelsey and Lesley Banks. Our Annual Dinner speakers have included well known local artists Lys Hansen, Richard Demarco, David Mach and Lachlan Goudie. Lay members may join at any time through our website and Artist submissions selection is scheduled a huge year in September.
