The Life of Thomas Stuart Smith captured in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped

Join us for ‘The Life of Thomas Stuart Smith: Captured in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped‘, a lecture on our founder’s life, as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations.

Ailsa Stanwix takes us back 150 years to the time when the Smith first opened its doors. She uncovers the story of Thomas Stuart Smith’s incredible life and how he came to be immortalised in Robert Louis Stevenson’s book Kidnapped.

About Ailsa Stanwix

Ailsa Stanwix with her husband purchased Thomas Stuart Smith’s former house, Old Glassingall, about 10-years ago. She used her training as a lawyer to research Smith’s papers to unravel the story of his remarkable life and his connections to Robert Louis Stevenson and his novels Kidnapped and Catriona. She is about to start a PhD in Scottish Literature at Glasgow University to further explore these connections.
